Ocean City, Maryland

Mike grew up outside Ocean City and remembered going there every summer, and used to talk about it all the time.  Since he's been at a new job this summer, he hasn't had a lot of time to take off - so as Labor Day weekend approached, I thought it would be fun to go back there for a couple of days.  The weather and the beach were gorgeous!  We couldn't have asked for better weather.  Hurricane Irene was supposed to go right through that area the weekend before, but completely missed it - although they did evacuate and chase all the tourists away, so it was less busy than I imagine it is normally.  We had a great time and spent a lot of time on the beach.  They also have a boardwalk that runs for miles, but that was mostly silly neon t-shirt shops, tourist junk, and arcade games - with bars and restaurants in between.  We didn't buy much, but it was good for people watching!  Taylor brought her camera, so most of the pictures are hers.

The beach right outside of our hotel room

She did let me take a few pictures with her camera..

The empty lifeguard chairs were too good to pass up at night - we had to sneak up and take a few pictures..

They only allow bikes on the boardwalk before 11am - after that it's just too busy.  We didn't do it the first day, but had to try it on the second!  They rented us 3 bikes for a few dollars and we went for a ride before breakfast.

The surf shop was too much to pass up

So Taylor and I decided to take a 60 minute lesson on Sunday.  We had tried it once before with Steve in Florida and were hoping to get better this time!  Here we are in front of the shop in our wetsuits, ready to go.

Getting a few pointers from our instructor before we started..

Taylor just after she was able to get up - and about to get pounded by the wave :)
This is WAY harder than it looks - I swear that it's the hardest thing I have ever tried to do!  We got absolutely pummeled by a few of the waves - the board went flying and we went head over heels under the wave.  We'd emerge coughing and sputtering, and ready to try it again.  I don't know how long it takes to master this ridiculous sport, but definitely more than an hour... I'm sure we'll try again sometime though - we had a great, great time!

Evidence of how hard we worked - hair all askew, makeup running - you can't tell, but we still have salt water coming out of our noses...

The morning before our flight, Taylor decided she wanted to get up before sunrise so she could take a few pictures on the beach - it was an absolutely beautiful morning!! I'm so glad we did it!  Here are her pictures:

It's hard not to love the ocean after a trip like this - so much fun!!
